Giuliano Medici -Heady study (In Progress)

  1. Very well done! I'm admiring how you did the shadows so perfectly! I have trouble on portraits, creating a difference between the cast shadows and the contour shadows that shape the face. Do you use different pencils for different kinds of dark areas?

  2. Thanks Katherine :)

Once I define the shape, I block all my dark areas with a soft pencil (3B/2B). Then I darken the cast shadows and the core shadow(form shadow), usually with the same pencil ( just press it a little harder). If I need to go darker I sometimes use 4B.

For all the light areas I use a harder pencil (B, HB,H).

I hope I answered your question:)
